Air Force revamps squadrons as it prepares for the next big fight


It's the most basic structural unit of the Air Force - it's "beating heart," as Chief of Staff Gen. Dave Goldfein is fond of saying. But over the past 17 years, the Air Force's roughly 3,400 squadrons have evolved to fight wars against relatively small-scale violent extremists such as al Qaida and the Islamic State, in which the Air Force and its coalition partners have ruled the skies.
